Hip Hop: A Culture of Influence

Created in the late 1990s, this film explores the history of Hip Hop as a musical genre and as a lifestyle, documenting an important stage in the transformation of Hip Hop culture. Commissioned and exhibited by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the film celebrates Hip Hop’s role as a unifying force among youth of different backgrounds, while also critically examining how issues such as materialism, misogyny, and homophobia affect Hip Hop’s communities. The film includes conversations with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and other well-known artists early in their careers.
